Advice for First Time Hike with Friend and Dog

Next week a friend and I are planning to go on a 2.4 mile hike for the first time in NH. We’re bringing my dog with us (the trail is dog friendly which is why we chose it). The trail has about 1,100ft of elevation gain. We are going to bring the obvious stuff – bug spray, sunscreen, water, a bowl for my dog, sweatshirts, and lunch (we’re going to take our time and stop for lunch on the trial). Is there anything else we should plan to bring in our small backpack (we’re only planning to bring one backpack and take turns carrying it)?

  • First aid!!!

  • I recommend throwing in a couple of disposable rain ponchos as mountain weather is unpredictable and can change rapidly. You don’t want to get a suprise rain shower and end up wet and cold even on a short hike.

Also throw in a headlamp or flashlight just in case the hike takes longer than expected and you get caught out in the dark.
